Yeongmojae Hall, Yeongdong
영동 영모재 · 永同 永慕齋

This is a place where ancestral rites are held for the forebears of Nam Ju-han; it was built in 1828, the twenty-eighth year of King Sunjo, and repaired in 1888. It measures four kan across the front and two kan along the side, with a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof whose side profile forms the shape of the character for "eight" (八). There are two heated ondol rooms on either side of a central wooden-floored hall (daecheong), and the stone wall, the tall gate, the signboard, and records concerning the building are all preserved in their original form. It is a distinctive building in which, when a fire is lit in the ondol rooms, the smoke is drawn inward to maximise heat efficiency, and for this reason no chimney was installed. Yeongmojae Hall is valuable material for studying the structure of traditional ondol heating systems.
