In the Myeongbujeon Hall of Muryangsa Temple in Buyeo, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (Jijang Bosal) is enshrined at the centre of the altar, flanked by a triad including Musin Gwiwang (the Demon King Without Poison) and Domyeong Jonja (the Venerable Domyeong), with the Ten Kings of the underworld (Siwang) seated symmetrically, five to each side. Beside them stand judges (pangwan), messengers (saja) and Vajra guardians (Inwang). Each of the various figures is richly coloured, with delicately carved patterns on their robes, clearly showing the sculptural style popular in the 17th–18th centuries and the underworld faith (myeongbu sinang) that flourished in the late Joseon period. Considered together with other Buddhist relics at Muryangsa Temple, they are presumed to have been made in the mid-17th century, and the hall is well provided with the full complement of underworld images. The Myeongbujeon Hall of Muryangsa Temple was rebuilt into its present form in 1872 by the monk Wonyeol. The set of Ksitigarbha and Ten Kings statues enshrined within the hall is a valuable resource for religious and academic study and for research into the history of Buddhist art.
