Namgungchanmyo Stone Statue
남궁찬묘석상 · 南宮璨墓石像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are two stone statues standing before the tomb of Namgung Chan, a civil official of the early Joseon period. Namgung Chan passed the saengwon examination first in rank in 1477, the eighth year of King Seongjong, and passed the higher civil service examination in 1489, the twentieth year of King Seongjong; he took part in compiling the Veritable Records of King Seongjong, and also served as magistrate of Jeju-mok. In 1504, the tenth year of Yeonsangun's reign, he was made governor of Gangwon-do province, but incurred Yeonsangun's displeasure and was exiled. The two statues take the form of civil officials and stand at the south and north respectively. The heads are relatively large, the eyes bulge, the nose is thick, and the chin juts forward. The figures wear an overcoat carved in thin lines, with both hands tucked inside the sleeves. Given their considerable size and relatively accomplished carving, they are thought to have been made around the mid-sixteenth century, during the reign of King Jungjong (r. 1506-1544).
