Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese printing woodblocks form the collected literary works of No Sang-jik (1854–1931), a great scholar of the late Korean Empire period, comprising an enormous set of 25 volumes — 48 gwon (chapters) plus one volume of contents. No Sang-jik was of gentle character and outstanding scholarship, and although he was summoned early to serve the state, he devoted himself instead to training the next generation because of the turbulent times. Having received the succession (uibal, robe and bowl) from Heo Jeon, who carried on the scholarly lineage of Yi Sik, he was a great Confucian scholar who established a practical school of thought devoted to the dissemination of national texts. As a scholar in the sirhak (practical learning) tradition of seeking truth through facts, he left behind numerous writings, including Dongguk ssijokgo, a biographical dictionary; Yeosa suji, an educational textbook; Sangnye pyeollam, a practical manual of etiquette; and Gangyeokgo, a book of historical geography. The printing woodblocks for his massive Collected Works of Master Sonul, in 48 gwon and 24 volumes, were carved and published by his disciples at Nogok in Miryang in 1934, after his death. The contents of the collection are classified into poetry (si), letters (seo), memorials submitted to the throne (so), miscellaneous writings (japjeo), prefaces placed at the front of books (seogi), postscripts, inscriptions carved on stone monuments (myeong), texts composed for the raising of a house's ridge beam (sangnyangmun), prayers (chukmun), memorial writings (jemun), accounts of conduct (haengjang) and chronological biographies (nyeonbo). As the writings of a great scholar who lived from the closing years of the Korean Empire into the middle of the Japanese colonial period, they reveal the trends and character of the local literati centred on Miryang at that time.
