Seated Munsusa Temple Wooden Shakyamuni Buddha
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This wooden seated image of Shakyamuni Buddha is enshrined at Munsusa Temple in Hwangsan-dong, Gimje, Jeollabuk-do. The head is bowed slightly forward, and the body is neat and well-proportioned. A record recently discovered inside the statue reveals that it was made in 1610. The hand gesture is close to that of Amitabha Buddha, who is said to deliver all sentient beings, yet the record identifies the image as Shakyamuni. It is valuable evidence that the iconography of Shakyamuni took varied forms in the late Joseon period.
