A gongsillokgwon is a certificate issued by the state when conferring merit-subject status on an official who has rendered distinguished service to the nation. This roll of merit was granted to the military official Yi Su-il (1554–1632) during the reign of King Injo, when, as army commander (byeongmajeoldosa) and deputy commander-in-chief of Pyeongan Province, he suppressed Yi Gwal's Rebellion and was named a second-class Jinmu Meritorious Subject and enfeoffed as Gyerim-buwongun. Yi Su-il was a military official of the mid-Joseon period who passed the military examination in 1583 and rose through posts including the Military Training Command and royal messenger (seonjeongwan). When the Japanese invasions broke out he raised righteous militia and fought, and when Yi Gwal's Rebellion occurred in 1624 he defeated the rebel forces and recovered Seoul, for which he was enfeoffed as a lord. Yi Su-il's portraits comprise three paintings: a full-length figure, a figure seated turned obliquely to the right, and a frontal figure. The full-length portrait shows him in black-green official robes patterned with clouds, cut and joined as if from a single length of cloth; the rank badge shows a peony arranged around a haetae (a mythical guardian beast), and he sits in a chair with both hands folded together. The obliquely seated figure has a face and wrinkle-lines lightly rendered in red that match those of the full-length portrait so closely that it appears to have been traced from it, though the beard, ears and official headgear are less fully worked out, having been outlined simply and then coloured. The style of these portraits reflects the characteristics of the early 17th century.
