Anseong Jungnim-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda
안성죽림리삼층석탑 · 安城竹林里三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeveral architectural members that had lain scattered at a former temple site in Juksan-myeon were originally gathered and reassembled, then moved to their present location in front of Daeungjeon Hall at Chiljangsa Temple in November 2005. The pagoda stands 363cm high overall; the base is a single tier, and the upper surface of the ground stone bears a two-tiered arched-and-angled moulding. The body of the pagoda rises in three storeys, and the roof stones (okgaeseok, the stones that cap a stone pagoda or lantern like a roof) were taken from another pagoda. The first-storey body stone is assembled from two pieces of stone: the piece bearing a door design was brought from a nearby field where it had been excavated, while the other piece was newly made to reinforce it. The door is carved in the form of a niche, with vertical lines representing the door leaves and circular ring handles carved to either side. Although partly damaged, the roof stones show the same stone-dressing technique and the same proportional reduction in size from the first to the third storey, and their well-matched proportions indicate that they originally belonged to the same pagoda. Each roof stone has four steps of eaves-supports, cut at equal height with sharp angles. The sloping roof surface descends gently and is hollowed slightly at the centre to form a soft curve. Judging from the treatment of the base and the sloping roof surfaces, and from the proportional reduction of the body, the pagoda is thought to carry on the stone pagoda style of the Unified Silla period and to have been built in the early Goryeo period.
