Gaeamsa Temple is located in Sangseo-myeon, Muan-gun, Jeonbuk State. Sixteen arhat statues, each in a different pose, are enshrined in the temple's Eungjinjeon Hall. "Arhat" (nahan) is short for "arahan," meaning a sage who has severed all afflictions, attained enlightenment, and possesses merit worthy of receiving the offerings of worldly people. According to surviving records such as the Balwongi (Record of Vows) and the Sajeokgi (Temple History), the statues were made in the third year of King Sukjong of Joseon (1677). The elegant forms and soft volume of the Sixteen Arhats clearly display the characteristics of seventeenth-century Buddhist statues. The related records are well preserved, and stylistically the work is representative of the features of seventeenth-century Buddhist sculpture.
