Yu Baek-jeung Portrait
유백증 초상 · 兪伯曾 肖像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of Yu Baek-jeung (1587–1646), a civil official of late Joseon. Yu rendered service in the Injo Restoration of 1623, the fifteenth year of King Gwanghaegun, was enfeoffed as Gipyeong-buwongun, and subsequently served as Daesagan, head of the Office of Censors-General, and as Vice Minister of Personnel. After his death he was posthumously promoted to Chief State Councillor and given the posthumous title Chunggyeong-gong. The painting is a full-length seated portrait showing him in plain, unpatterned official robes of dark greyish brown, turned slightly to the right; it measures 95 cm across and 174 cm in height. The folds of the robe are rendered with vigorous strokes, and the samo on his head is drawn with comparative care. His two hands are clasped together inside his sleeves. On the chest and back of the robes is a rank badge decorated with two cranes and peonies against a ground of cloud patterns, richly coloured with gold pigment. The outline of the face is only faintly drawn, but details such as the beard are rendered with precision. Although the date of production is not certain, the work shows the character of mid-Joseon painting and is executed with vigorous brushwork.
