Designated a Chungcheongnam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage on 30 October 2006, the Songnimsa Temple Stupa, Yesan is presumed to be an early Goryeo stupa that carried on the octagonal form of stupas from the late Unified Silla period. The Songnimsa Temple Stupa, Yesan is an octagonal stupa (budo, a structure enshrining the sarira, or relics, of an eminent monk) of the Goryeo period. It is traditionally said to be the stupa of State Preceptor Doseon (827–898) of the late Unified Silla period, and for this reason is also called the Doseon Stupa. The Songnimsa Temple Stupa, Yesan is 2.4 m tall and made of granite. It bears a relief carving of two dragons holding a wish-fulfilling jewel, and follows the typical form of octagonal stupas. Its structure shows the traditional octagonal-hall form throughout: a base section, set on an octagonal foundation stone, complete with upper, middle and lower tiers, and a body section equipped with a tower body and roof stone. On its finial are placed an overturned-bowl ornament, a roof stone, a boban [a square, roof-shaped ornament at the top tier of a pagoda], and a jewel-shaped finial.
