흥복사대웅전목조삼존불좌상 · 興福寺大雄殿木造三尊佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a wooden Buddha triad enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall of Heungboksa Temple in Heungsa-dong, Gimje, Jeollabuk-do. At the centre is a 1.1 m tall Shakyamuni Buddha, flanked on the left by a 0.96 m tall Amitabha Buddha and on the right by a 0.96 m tall Bhaisajyaguru Buddha. The Shakyamuni Buddha has an overall well-balanced form, though the head is somewhat large in proportion to the body. The robe is draped over the left shoulder only and is rendered thickly, so that the contours of the body are not clearly revealed. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingers pointing downward. The Amitabha Buddha on the left is made slightly smaller than the principal Buddha. Its overall treatment is similar, but the robe, draped over both shoulders, and the hand gesture differ from those of the main Buddha. The Bhaisajyaguru Buddha on the right, believed to cure the illnesses and sufferings of sentient beings, is depicted in a form symmetrical to the Amitabha Buddha. When the statues were recently regilded, an inscription was found on the Shakyamuni Buddha statue stating that it was made in 1676. It is an important work that serves as a benchmark for dating Buddhist statues of the late Joseon period.
