This is an Amitabha Buddha statue enshrined in Geungnakjeon Hall at Hyeondeungsa Temple. The right hand is raised to shoulder height and the left hand rests on the knee, each forming, with thumb and middle finger touching, the mudra of preaching distinctive to Amitabha. The two hands were carved separately and then fitted onto the body. Standing 138 cm in overall height, it belongs to the medium size range among statues made in the late Joseon period, and it takes a slightly stooped posture with the upper body leaning forward. The large topknot bead at the crown and centre of the head, the square face and body proportions, the way the upper body tilts back while the head juts slightly forward, and the broad, simple folds of the robe all clearly display the characteristics of late Joseon Buddhist statues.
