Seokjonghyeong Stupa of Yeongguksa Temple, Yeongdong
영동 영국사 석종형승탑 · 永同 寧國寺 石鍾形僧塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a reliquary stupa for a monk, standing behind the Stele for State Preceptor Wongak (Treasure No. 534) within Yeongguksa Temple; whose relics it enshrines has not yet been identified. The platform (gidan) set upon a square base stone consists of three tiers, all octagonal. Around the lower and upper platform stones — though not the middle one — lotus flowers have been carved, each petal rendered as a single layer. Above this rises a bell-shaped body (tapsin), whose finial even recalls the ring used for hanging an actual bell, making it closely resemble a real bell. From the base stone to the finial the stupa is made up of six stones in total, and although it is a bell-shaped (seokjong-hyeong) stupa, its structure is unique and unlike that of any other stupa. As the lotus petals are all rendered in a single layer, the stupa is thought to have been erected in the late Goryeo or early Joseon period. Since the Stele for State Preceptor Wongak stands behind it, the stupa is presumed to be closely connected with State Preceptor Wongak as well.
