Guhyeong Stupa of Yeongguksa Temple, Yeongdong
영동 영국사 구형승탑 · 永同 寧國寺 球形僧塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stupa, standing behind the Stele for National Preceptor Wongak (Treasure No. 534) within Yeongguksa Temple, enshrines relics whose owner is unknown. The stupa's base consists of a square foundation stone topped by an octagonal lower pedestal stone and, above that, an octagonal upper pedestal stone. The lower pedestal stone has shallow niche-shaped carvings on each face, while the flat-topped upper pedestal stone is encircled below by a single band of lotus-petal decoration. The body stone of the stupa is spherical, and the octagonal roof stone, with many of its details omitted, is plain and roughly finished. Above the roof stone sits a finial in the shape of a flower bud. The omission or simplification of carved details in each part, together with the single band of lotus petals, suggests that this is a work of the late Goryeo to early Joseon period. Its position directly behind the Stele for National Preceptor Wongak suggests that it was closely connected with him.
