Standing Gurye Daejeon-ri Stone Buddha
구례대전리석불입상 · 求禮大田里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone Buddha, in a place also known as 'Mireukgol' (Maitreya Valley), stands at the northern end of a reservoir in Sangdae Village, Daejeon-ri, Gwangui-myeon, Gurye County, South Jeolla Province. The face has been much worn away by wind and rain and is now indistinct, but it is oval in shape with a gentle expression. The hand gesture, in which the right hand grasps the left, shows a form that has become altered as it moved somewhat later in date. Right beside the stone Buddha is an 80 cm-tall offering figure seated with bent knees, and two stone pillars remain around it. This appears to follow the same arrangement as the stone lantern of Hwaeomsa Temple, in which an offering figure is seated beneath the lantern standing before the Four-Lion Three-story Stone Pagoda, with stone pillars erected around it to form a place for lighting a flame. Ordinary Vairocana Buddhas are seated, but this stone Buddha is unusual in being a standing example. It is important material for studying how the hand gestures of Buddha statues changed in the transition from the late Unified Silla period to the early Goryeo period.
