Seated Rock-carved Buddha in Gusan-dong, Gimhae

This Buddha image is engraved in fine incised lines on a smoothed section of the rock face. It has both a halo behind the head and a halo behind the body, and sits in the full lotus position on a lotus pedestal. An usnisha rises from the crown of the head, and on the oval face the eyes, nose and mouth are lightly incised. The broad shoulders and firmly set width of the knees give the body a sturdy, robust impression. The right hand is raised to chest height and the left hand rests on the left knee, a posture that suggests this is an image of Amitabha Buddha. The robe, covering both shoulders, opens broadly in a U-shape at the front, beneath which a monastic undergarment (seunggaggi) is shown draped diagonally, and a few incised folds of drapery fall over the arms. The lotus pedestal, with its upward- and downward-facing lotus petals, is likewise rendered simply, with single-layer petals incised in fine lines. Judging from this technique of incised carving and the sculptural style, the work is thought to date from the Goryeo period.
