Seated Gangjin Ongnyeonsa Temple Wooden Buddha
강진옥련사목조여래좌상 · 康津玉蓮寺木造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the principal image of the Buddhist triad enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall of Ongnyeonsa Temple, on Mandeoksan Mountain in Gangjin-eup, Gangjin County, South Jeolla Province. The statue is said to have been brought here in 1951 from Jeongsusa Temple in Yongun-ri, Daegu-myeon, Gangjin County. The square face is tilted slightly forward, and the shoulders, draped in thick robes, form angular lines that give a somewhat stiff impression. Of the two hands resting on the knees, the right hand points its fingertips towards the ground, while the left hand, held near the navel, has its palm turned upward; the left hand was carved separately and attached, and the characters 釋迦 ('Seokga', Sakyamuni) are inscribed at the wrist, showing that the statue represents the Sakyamuni Buddha. Records discovered inside the statue reveal that it was made in 1684, at the same time as the Sixteen Arhats — sixteen enlightened disciples of the Buddha — at Jeongsusa Temple. The impassive face and heavy robes reflect the secularised style of Buddhist statues in the late Joseon period, and the statue is valued for the certainty of its date of production.
