Standing Rock-carved Buddha in Nowon-ri, Jincheon
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stone Buddha stands in Nowon-ri, Iwol-myeon, Jincheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. It is carved in low relief, together with its pedestal, on a huge rock face, 6.1 m high and 4.2 m wide. Although the overall expression is formulaic and stylised, the head halo and body halo are clearly defined, and the serene, full appearance of the face distinguishes it from other Buddha statues. The gentle smile, the seemingly closed eyes, the robe draped over both shoulders, and the horizontally carved pedestal all indicate that this is a large-scale Buddha statue made during the Goryeo period.
