Jangmokjin Guest House, Geoje
거제 장목진 객사 · 巨濟 長木鎭 客舍

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the government office building of Jangmokpo-jin, one of the seven garrisons under Geoje-bu during the Joseon period. The exact date of its original construction is not known, but the building is said to have stood at the entrance to Jangmok-ri before being moved and rebuilt on the present site in the ninth year of King Jeongjo's reign (1785). Situated at the mouth of the Hallyeo Maritime area, this site was a strategically vital point for defending the whole of Jinhae Bay and keeping watch over the Korea Strait, and it was constantly used as a place where generals gathered to discuss strategy. During the Imjin War, it is said that Yi Sun-sin and Yi Yeong-nam devised strategy here. The building is four bays wide and two bays deep, with a hipped-and-gabled roof shaped like the character for eight (八). It was rebuilt in the second year of King Sunjo's reign (1802) and shows the architectural style of the late Joseon period. The present building was restored again in 1981–1982; there are rooms on either side, with a broad wooden-floored hall in the centre where the commander conducted official business. It has the typical floor plan of a Joseon government guest house.
