Hyebongwon Wooden Shakyamuni Buddha Triad
혜봉원목조석가여래삼존상 · 慧峰院木造釋迦如來三尊像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krEnshrined in Burijeongsa, the main worship hall of Hyebongwon, are a seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and a statue of Bohyeon Bosal (Samantabhadra Bodhisattva), part of a larger triad. In the triad the seated Shakyamuni Buddha sits at the centre with Bohyeon Bosal and Munsu Bosal (Manjusri Bodhisattva) at either side; the Munsu Bosal figure was lost and has recently been remade. The seated Shakyamuni Buddha at the centre has a head covered with small, snail-shell-shaped curls, with a distinct topknot-shaped protuberance at the crown. The thick-folded robe covers both shoulders and flows down to cover the knees. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingertips pointing towards the ground, forming the earth-touching gesture that symbolises the subjugation of demons. The Bohyeon Bosal statue, its head bowed slightly forward, wears an ornate crown, and its face resembles that of the seated Buddha. The hair flowing down beneath the crown reaches to both shoulders. The right hand is raised to shoulder height with the thumb and middle finger touching, and the left hand rests on the left knee, likewise with thumb and middle finger touching. This triad was made in 1712, the 38th year of King Sukjong of Joseon, at Dosoram Hermitage in Buan. It is notable that, whereas bodhisattva statues commonly hold a lotus branch, this Bohyeon Bosal statue instead makes the same hand gesture as a Buddha statue. Records survive that reveal the circumstances of the statue's creation, and it is valued for expressing well the style of Buddhist statues of the late Joseon period.
