Vulture Peak Assembly Painting of Magoksa Temple, Gongju
공주 마곡사 영산회상도 · 公州 麻谷寺 靈山會上圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddhist painting hangs behind the main altar in the Daegwangbojeon Hall of Magoksa Temple, the head temple of the sixth diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. A Vulture Peak Assembly painting renders in iconographic form the assembly at which Sakyamuni Buddha preached the Lotus Sutra to his disciples on Vulture Peak. According to the production inscription, the Magoksa Vulture Peak Assembly Painting was made in 1788, the twelfth year of King Jeongjo, jointly by fifteen monk-painters including Donghong. On its large surface it depicts, in a well-organised composition, the Dharma assembly where Sakyamuni preached the Lotus Sutra on Vulture Peak; its relatively subdued colouring and schematic shading are characteristic of Buddhist paintings of the late eighteenth century.
