Standing Stone Buddha in Oryong-ri, Damyang
담양 오룡리 석불입상 · 潭陽五龍里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue stands beside a road about 1 km east of Oedang village, Oryong-ri, Mujeong-myeon, Damyang County, Jeollanam-do. The body of the Buddha and its halo are carved in relief on a single stone. Old roof-tile fragments found around the statue indicate that this was once the site of a temple. According to tradition, the statue was made during the Goryeo period to honour the souls of monks who died fighting the Mongol army. A notable feature of this statue is its thick lips, an expression frequently seen in the Jeollanam-do region among the localised styles of Buddhist statues popular during the Goryeo period. The robe is worn over both shoulders, and its folds form a U-shape, rendered in a highly formalised manner down to below the legs. The left hand is raised and the right hand lowered close against the body, the reverse of the hand positions usually seen in Buddha statues. The pedestal on which the statue stands is a long oval of lightly worked natural stone, its upper surface flattened to hold the statue in place. The nearly square face, short neck, and formalised robe folds suggest that the statue was made sometime after the mid-Goryeo period.
