Celadon Inlaid Chrysanthemum Design Pyohyeong Bottle
청자상감국화문표형병 · 靑磁象嵌菊花文瓢形甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis gourd-shaped bottle, 46cm high, is decorated with a chrysanthemum design rendered in the inlay (sanggam) technique. The body is divided by grooves into six sections, each further divided into two facets. On each facet of the lower body a row of connected black-and-white inlaid chrysanthemum designs is arranged, while on the upper facets of the shoulder, black-and-white inlaid ruyi-head, chrysanthemum and linked-bead roundel designs are arranged. Around the mouth and the area surrounding it, a band of black-and-white inlaid lotus-petal design encircles the vessel, and within each lotus petal a row of linked-bead roundel design is inlaid in white. White-inlaid lotus-petal design also encircles the foot. A strong brownish glaze tone caused by oxidation appears on the upper part of the vessel and on one side of the middle section. The foot takes the form of a splayed leg-foot, but the type of firing support used is unclear. Although the glaze colour and workmanship of this gourd-shaped celadon bottle are not especially refined, its height of 46cm makes it a large-scale piece; no other bottle of this size is currently known, and it also clearly demonstrates the style of inlay decoration of the late Goryeo period (13th century).
