Seated Stone Avalokitesvara of Gosansa Temple, Jecheon
제천 고산사 석조관음보살좌상 · 堤川 高山寺 石造觀音菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the Avalokitesvara statue enshrined in Eungjinjeon Hall of Gosansa Temple on Waryongsan Mountain, in Deoksan-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. The temple holds a renovation record compiled in the 1920s, according to which it was founded by State Preceptor Doseon in the late Silla to early Goryeo period. However, this is not certain, since roof-tile and celadon fragments found at the temple are relics of the Goryeo and Joseon periods. The Avalokitesvara statue in Eungjinjeon Hall is presumed to have been made in the mid-Joseon period. It wears a finely crafted jewelled crown, and the face and body show balanced proportions throughout. The shoulders are, however, somewhat drawn in and the chin bows noticeably low, features that reflect the Buddhist statue style of the late Joseon period.
