Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a copy of the Gyechosimhaginmun found inside the Four Heavenly Kings statue of Borimsa Temple, in Bongdeok-ri, Yuchi-myeon, Jangheung County, South Jeolla Province. It was written by Jinul in the mid-Goryeo period, when he founded Suseonsa on Jogyesan Mountain and gave rise to Seon (Zen) thought, for the sake of those newly entering Buddhism and to establish discipline at Suseonsa. Selecting the core content of Buddhist practice and adapting it to suit Korea, it was adopted as a textbook in specialist Buddhist seminaries and became a basic primer that not only monks but also lay believers were required to learn. Bound together after this text are the Mongsan Hwasang Beobeo Yangnok and the Hunmong Yocho; because the main text carries Hanja gugyeol (Chinese-character reading glosses), it has great scholarly value. The Hunmong Yocho has been found to have been printed considerably earlier than previously known, which is noteworthy. As the oldest copy known to date, it is highly valued both for its heritage significance and for its scholarly importance.
