Seated Gyeongju Dongcheon-dong Rock-carved Buddha Triad
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a Buddha triad carved into a natural rock face east of the summit of Geumgangsan Mountain in Dongcheon-dong, Gyeongju. The principal Buddha sits in the centre, with an attendant bodhisattva carved on each side. Judging by the small Buddha carved into the jewelled crown worn by the bodhisattva on the right, the triad appears to represent an Amitabha Triad. Although the principal Buddha stands about 3m tall, making this an enormous rock-carved Buddha, it is carved close to a shallow line-engraving technique and is badly worn in places. The rendering of the carved robes and the form of the hands provide valuable material for the study of rock-carved Buddhas of the Unified Silla period.
