Buncheong Ware Underglaze Iron Peony Design Jang Group
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a jangun, a horizontal jar with a side spout used for carrying liquids, with an elongated body and an oval foot. The body was slipped vertically with white clay (buncheong), then encircled on both sides with two bands of line decoration; one end was finished in the form of an inward-curving foot, while the other bears a double concentric circle. On both sides of the body an underglaze iron peony design is arranged symmetrically, and a simplified underglaze iron scroll design is placed on the side opposite the inward-curving foot. A matte glaze has been applied, with almost no crackling. The foot flares outward in the form of a leg-foot, and faint traces remain where the glaze was wiped from the foot base and sand used as a support during firing. The glaze did not melt fully, giving the surface a hazy appearance, but among underglaze iron jangun of the same type and form, the design is distinctive for being rendered far more vigorously and boldly than previously known examples. Apart from some flaking of the white slip on the surface, the piece is in clean condition with no repairs.
