Borimsa Temple Four Guardian Kings Sang Votive Gobonghwasangseonyo
보림사사천왕상복장고봉화상선요 · 寶林寺四天王像腹藏高峰和尙禪要

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a relic that had been placed inside the Four Guardian Kings statues at Borimsa Temple, in Bongdeok-ri, Yuchi-myeon, Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do. The Gobonghwasangseonyo compiles the sermons of the eminent Song-dynasty monk Gobong, summarising the core teachings of Seon (Zen) Buddhism. Since its publication it has continued to be adopted as a textbook in specialist Buddhist seminaries and is still widely read today. The exact date this text was transmitted to Korea is not known, but records show it was first printed in 1358, suggesting it had already reached Korea before that date. Among the various surviving editions, the copy from Borimsa Temple appears to be the oldest known today.
