Buncheong Ware Incised Peony Design Jang Group
분청사기조화모란문장군 · 粉靑沙器彫花牧丹文장군

The body of this vessel is close to a squared column in shape, flat on one side and rounded on the other — a jangun, a type of oblong storage vessel. The entire surface was coated with a white slip (baekto bunjang), after which the design was cut into it using the incising (johwa) and sgraffito (bakji) techniques, in which the pattern is carved through the white slip to expose the darker clay body beneath. A peony design is incised on both flat faces of the body, while the rounded side bears a floral design and a lotus-petal design. Floral designs are also incised on both sides of the mouth. The vessel is covered with a transparent, pale bluish-green buncheong glaze, which has a fine network of crackles and a good lustre. The foot is flat, and the base was fired resting on sand. Part of the mouth rim is damaged, but this jangun, of an unusual form lacking a separate foot ring, is a fine piece in which the bold incised decoration is in harmony with the shape of the vessel.
