Wonhyosa Temple takes its name from the fact that the great monk Wonhyo settled there to practise meditation and cultivate the way during the reign of Queen Jindeok of Silla. This copy of the Lotus Sutra, transcribed in Hangeul in 1626, the fourth year of King Injo of Joseon, was made up of one volume in two books. The calligraphy is exemplary and correct, and the sutra survives in good condition. As a merit sutra — a sutra copied as an act of religious devotion — produced by a senior court lady-in-waiting under the strict Confucian norms of the early seventeenth century, it is a valuable source, and it is also regarded as an important text for the study of Hangeul phonetic transcription.
