Standing Seokjoyaksa Temple Buddha of Deokjusa Temple, Jecheon
제천 덕주사 석조약사여래입상 · 堤川 德周寺 石造藥師如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue originally stood at a site traditionally known as the former temple site of Jeongeumsa Temple, and was moved to its present location in April 1983 during the construction of Chungju Dam. Although partly worn, it remains in relatively complete condition. In particular, because it had long been buried underground, only the lower part of the body is slightly damaged, while the drapery folds and other details survive in good condition. The head bears a low, small topknot-shaped bun, and the face is elongated yet full. Both eyes appear narrow and long but are too worn to make out clearly, and the ears hang down long enough to reach the shoulders. The robe is shown only formally over the left shoulder, leaving the chest broadly exposed, with the folds gathered to the left side. The right hand is raised to the chest with the palm turned outward, the thumb bent to touch the little finger, while the left hand is held horizontally down to the level of the abdomen, supporting a medicine bowl, identifying the figure as the Medicine Buddha. Overall the head is large in proportion to the body, and the pedestal was made separately, with only the two feet carved on its upper surface to support the body set above.
