White Porcelain Underglaze Cobalt Blue Plum and Bamboo Design inscribed "Si" Bottle
백자청화매죽문시명병 · 白磁靑畵梅竹文詩銘甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a white porcelain bottle with a body that swells round like a ball yet is slightly elongated, a neck of moderate thickness and length, and a mouth rim that curls outward. A body of this shape is a feature seen mainly on porcelain bottles of the eighteenth century. On the front and back at the centre of the body, a bamboo with slender stalks and a single plum tree in bloom, its flowers open but not yet in leaf, are painted in underglaze cobalt blue; in the space between them is written, in accomplished calligraphy, a line of poetry of the kind frequently inscribed on Korean porcelain. The colour of the glaze and body is the milky white typical of the eighteenth century. It is a fine piece, with the ground beneath the bamboo also decorated and a neatly written line of poetry inscribed upon it.
