Standing Stone Avalokitesvara in Miam-ri, Jeungpyeong
증평 미암리 석조관음보살입상 · 曾坪 彌巖里 石造觀音菩薩立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddhist statue in Songsan-ri, Jeungpyeong-eup, Jeungpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. The canopy stone that once topped its head is broken and now lies beneath an old tree outside the protective shelter. Between the eyebrows is a round urna (a tuft-of-white-hair mark), and the eyes, nose and mouth are well-proportioned and gentle. The neck bears three clearly carved lines, a conventional feature of Buddhist iconography, and the body has a somewhat stout appearance. The robe, covering both shoulders, drapes down over them to the sides, and the lower garment is only faintly indicated at the navel. The left hand is held below the abdomen with the palm turned outward, and a stone is placed before the statue for worshippers to bow on. Judging from the small Buddha figures carved on the crown once worn on its head, the treatment of the canopy, and the carving style of the robe folds and face, the statue is presumed to date from the mid-Goryeo period.
