The Books and Documents and Historical Documents held at Gwangokseowon Confucian Academy comprise 12 volumes of books and 10 old documents (loose sheets), produced between 1790 and 1868, around the time Gwangokseowon was built in 1804. Among them, the Samseonsaeng Haengjang (Record of the Conduct of the Three Teachers) — a haengjang being a written account of a deceased scholar's life and conduct — records the biographies of the three scholars enshrined at the academy: Choe Yun-deok (pen name Hoyeonjeong, 1376–1445), Yi Jeok (pen name Cheonghodang) and Yi Hyeong-nam (pen name Biam). This was written in 1790, while all the other items date from after 1804. The collection includes the Seonsaeng Silgi (Authentic Records of the Teachers) of Gwangokseowon, together with holgi (manuals of ritual procedure), jangian (registers of the academy's officers), simwollok (registers of visitors), yusaengan (registers of enrolled student-scholars), bojikan (registers of persons assigned to support duties), bonoan (registers of assigned servants exempted from other labour), wanmun (official certificates), pummok (petitions submitted to the authorities), jeollyeong (official directives) and tongmun (circular letters exchanged between Confucian institutions). The jangian records the names of the academy's jangui and yusa officers from 1804 to 1868, and the simwollok lists a total of 104 people who visited Gwangokseowon between 1804 and 1865. In addition, the wanmun, bonoan and bojikan exempted the academy's jeobin (attendants) from miscellaneous labour duties and assigned bo, or support personnel, to the academy; and since the yusaengan even records commoners among the enrolled students, this collection is valued as precious material offering a glimpse into one aspect of how a Confucian academy was run in the 19th century.
