Borimsa Temple stands on Mount Gajisan in Jangheung County, Jeollanam-do, and was founded in 860 by the Silla monk Chejing. This book is one of the relics that had been placed inside the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings at Borimsa Temple for safekeeping. It is a commentary on the Heart Sutra written by the monk Daejeonhwasang, commonly known as the "Commentary on the Heart Sutra of the Great Perfection of Wisdom" (Maha Banya Paramilda Simgyeonghae). It is a sutra intended to correct the deluded thinking of sentient beings and lead them to the state beyond birth and death, so that they might see their own original mind and nature. At the back of the book is a record stating that the woodblocks were carved in 1411 at Munsusa Temple in Gochang, Jeollanam-do; this printing is known to be the only one of its kind produced in Korea.
