Hoyeonjeong Pavilion, Hapcheon
합천 호연정 · 浩然亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDuring the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon (r. 1567–1608), Iyodang Ju I, who had served as magistrate of Yean, retired from office and built Hoyeonjeong Pavilion here, where he trained many disciples. It later burned down in the Imjin War but was rebuilt by his descendants in remembrance of his virtue. It is a single-storey building, three bays wide and two bays deep, with a hipped-and-gabled roof whose side profile forms the shape of the character for "eight" (八). A distinctive feature is that naturally curved timber was used just as it was beneath the roof, resembling a writhing dragon and creating a striking decorative effect. Overall, the structural members are highly decorative, and the building combines two different architectural styles, giving its structure great variety. The pavilion is surrounded by several stands of bamboo said to have been planted by Ju I himself, forming a beautiful setting.
