In both scale and pictorial quality, this work fully embodies the dignity of Joseon-period portraiture. Neat and accomplished even down to the finest detail, it is in good condition overall, although the current storage space is too cramped, forcing the paintings to hang awkwardly, so their state of preservation has suffered somewhat. The portrait of Heo Jeok shows him seated in a chair, looking to one side, with a foot resting on a tiger beneath the chair. In size, the portrait of his father, Heo Han, measures 147 cm in length by 63 cm in width, while that of Heo Jeok measures 162 cm by 83.5 cm (236 by 97 cm including the mounting). Heo Jeok's portrait is enshrined to the left of his father's, though it has deteriorated somewhat. Heo Jeok's grave lies in Oryang-ri, Sotae-myeon. Heo Han (1574–1642), courtesy name Uibo and pen name Hyango, was of the Yangcheon clan and the third son of Heo Jam, whose pen name was Hancheon. He served as magistrate of Yecheon and prefect of Icheon, and was posthumously honoured with the title of Chief State Councillor. Heo Jeok (1610–1680), a figure of the reign of King Sukjong of Joseon, had the courtesy name Yeocha and the pen names Mukje and Hyuong. Also of the Yangcheon clan, he was the son of Heo Han, a prefect, and was born in Goedong-ri, Eomjeong-myeon, Chungju. After serving as Governor of Pyeongan Province, he rose in 1667, the eighth year of King Hyeonjong, through State Councillor of the Right and State Councillor of the Left to Chief State Councillor, and in 1678, the fourth year of King Sukjong, had the Sangpyeong Tongbo coin minted and circulated to stem the depletion of state finances. Broadly learned and intelligent, he belonged to the Namin faction but remained on close terms with members of the rival Seoin faction, including Song Si-yeol.
