A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state, consisting of a ritual space centred on the Daeseongjeon Hall, where the spirit tablets of sages are enshrined and spring and autumn rites performed, and a lecture space centred on the Myeongnyundang, the hall where Confucian students were taught. Jinbohyanggyo was first built in 1404, the fourth year of King Taejong of Joseon. It was relocated to the foot of Gwangdeoksan Mountain in 1762, the 38th year of King Yeongjo, moved again to the old town centre in 1882, the 19th year of Emperor Gojong, and finally moved to its present site in 1886, the 23rd year of the same reign. Within the grounds, the Oesammun outer gate, the Myeongnyundang Hall and the east and west dormitories form the lecture space, while the Naesammun inner gate and the Daeseongjeon Hall form the ritual space. According to the Cheongsong County Gazetteer, a jeonsacheong, a hall for preparing ritual offerings, originally stood here as well. The Daeseongjeon Hall is three bays wide and three bays deep, and the Myeongnyundang Hall was repaired in 1898, the second year of the Gwangmu era. The east and west dormitories stand behind the Myeongnyundang Hall.
