Seven Stars Painting of Cheongnyongsa Temple
청룡사 칠성도 · 靑龍寺 七星圖
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Seven Stars Painting of Cheongnyongsa Temple was painted in 1868 by Eungnyun, Changyeop, Seungui and others, with Myeongjo serving as the verifying monk and Bogwan as the chanting monk. Centred on the Chiseonggwang Yeorae triad, the Buddha of Blazing Light and his two attendants, it depicts the Seven Star Buddhas, the Seven Original Stars, the Samtae Yukseong (Three Platforms and Six Stars), young maidens and heavenly maidens. Beneath the Chiseonggwang Yeorae stand the Bodhisattvas of Sunlight and Moonlight together with the Seven Original Stars in attendance, while to the left and right of the central image the Seven Star Buddhas stand with palms joined, facing the Chiseonggwang Yeorae. Above them, six double-topknot child attendants and two heavenly maidens are shown on either side with palms joined, and at the very top of the composition, left and right, the Samtae Yukseong are painted three to a group within round halos. In Seven Stars paintings of the late Joseon period, the Chiseonggwang Yeorae is generally shown not riding an ox-cart but seated in full lotus position on a Sumeru pedestal. This painting, however, depicts a white ox-cart, as in Seven Stars paintings produced mainly in the Seoul area in the late 19th century, and so displays well the distinctive iconography of Seven Stars paintings from the Seoul and Gyeonggi region at the close of the 19th century.
