Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBorimsa Temple is located on Gajisan Mountain in Jangheung County, South Jeolla Province, and was founded in 860 by the Silla monk Chejing. This book is one of the artefacts that had been placed inside the belly of one of the Four Guardian Kings statues at Borimsa Temple for safekeeping; in total 90 titles comprising 166 volumes were recovered. These represent the largest number of volumes among the artefacts found inside the Four Guardian Kings statues of Borimsa Temple, and most are texts related to the yesuje, a rite performed in advance during one's lifetime to accumulate merit through practice, and the suryukjae, a Dharma assembly making offerings to lonely spirits on water and land and to hungry, starving ghosts. It is presumed that Buddhist ceremonies were held continuously at Borimsa Temple around the time the Four Guardian Kings statues were made, and these materials allow us to see how active the temple was between the 16th and 18th centuries. The related editions number 90 titles in all, making this the largest such collection, in both number of titles and number of volumes, in Korea. A considerable number of these editions have been found to be the only surviving copies printed before the Japanese invasions of 1592, giving the collection even greater value.
