The Seogong (stone jar) of Beopjusa Temple has no known parallel elsewhere in Korea, and since there is no record of when it was made, its exact date of construction and original purpose cannot be determined. It is said, however, to have been used as a kimchi jar in the past, when some 3,000 monks resided at Beopjusa Temple, and traces of salt can still be detected inside it today, suggesting that it was used as a storage facility for vegetables and the like. It measures about 240 cm in depth, with an outer diameter at the top of about 240 cm and an inner diameter of about 85 cm. The top and bottom were each carved from a single stone into the shape of a jar, while the body was formed by shaping four or five stones, each about 30–40 cm in size, into rounded pieces, joining them into a circle and stacking them up in three tiers.
