This is a seated stone Buddha located in Gwaereung-ri, Oedong-eup, Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. It has a pedestal and a halo carved on the stone behind the body, but part of the halo and the head are so badly worn that their original form is difficult to make out. The robust body and waist, and the voluminous rendering of the knees, clearly show the style of Unified Silla. The right hand points its fingertips towards the ground, while the left hand rests on the left knee with the palm facing outward. The octagonal lotus pedestal is delicately and finely carved, and the halo, carved from the same stone as the Buddha's body, bears small Buddhas elaborately carved within an intricate flame pattern, giving a good sense of the period's style. There is a story that Asanyeo came searching for Asadal, who had built the Seokgatap Pagoda at Bulguksa Temple, and, while waiting for him, threw herself down and died, after which Asadal made this Buddha in her memory — but this cannot be confirmed with certainty.
