Borimsa Temple stands on Gajisan Mountain in Jangheung County, South Jeolla Province, and was founded in 860 by the Silla monk Chejing. This collection of books was among the votive objects placed inside the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings at Borimsa Temple, comprising forty-one titles in fifty-eight volumes altogether. It is characterised by consisting mainly of sutras, chief among them the Diamond Sutra and the Lotus Sutra. The Diamond Sutra is an abbreviation of the Geumgang Banya Baramil-gyeong (Vajracchedika-prajnaparamita Sutra) and, together with the Heart Sutra, is widely read as a fundamental scripture of the Jogye Order. The Lotus Sutra is the fundamental scripture of the Cheontae Order and, together with the Avatamsaka Sutra (Hwaeomgyeong), has greatly influenced the formation of Korean Buddhist thought. Most of these books were printed at temples in the Jeolla region, a fact which suggests that Borimsa Temple was active around the time the Four Heavenly Kings statues were made.
