The Guardian Deities Painting of Cheongnyongsa Temple was created by the master painter (geumeo) Geumgokdang Yeonghwan together with Eungnyun and Eunghun; Myeongeung Yungam, who painted a robe painting for Cheongnyongsa Temple in 1902, also took part as a sponsor. The composition, with Brahma and Wideecheon (Skanda) depicted in the upper register and Wideecheon at the centre of the lower register, was the most favoured format for guardian deity paintings and accounts for the largest number of surviving examples. As seen here, the iconography of a folding screen set as backdrop, with Brahma and Indra each framed by a near-rectangular halo, is one of the features found particularly in guardian deity paintings from the Seoul and Gyeonggi region in the late 19th century, also seen in the Guardian Deities Painting of Bongeunsa Temple (1844) and that of Sajaam Hermitage (1880). This work well illustrates the iconographic and stylistic characteristics of Buddhist paintings from the Seoul region in the late 19th century.
