Geoje Local Confucian School
거제향교 · 巨濟鄕校

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo, or local Confucian school, was an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to the local people. This school was first built at Gohyeon in the fourteenth year of King Sejong (1432), and was moved to its present site at Geoje in the fifth year of King Hyeonjong (1664). It follows the typical layout of a hall of study in front and a shrine behind: Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, and its east dormitory stand at the front, while Daeseongjeon, the shrine, and its east and west wings, Dongmu and Seomu, stand behind. Unusually, there is no west dormitory to match the one beside Myeongnyundang, and Daeseongjeon is very large in scale compared with Myeongnyundang. The school occupies a wider area than most other local Confucian schools, and the whole precinct is enclosed by a rustic stone wall. During the Joseon period the school received farmland, servants and books from the state to support the teaching of students, but today only the memorial rites are held.
