A hyanggyo, or local Confucian school, was an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to the local people. This school was first built at Gopyeong-dong in the first year of King Seonjo (1568), and was relocated to its present site in the tenth year of King Yeongjo (1734). It is also known as Hwayanghyanggyo. The buildings within the school include Naesammun, the inner gate leading to the shrine; Daeseongjeon, the shrine, with its east and west wings, Dongmu and Seomu; and Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, with its east and west dormitories. Unusually, the buildings are not arranged in the typical layout of a hall of study in front and a shrine behind, but instead have Daeseongjeon and Myeongnyundang placed side by side. During the Joseon period the school received land, books and servants from the state to support the teaching of students, but since the Gabo Reform (1894) only the memorial rites have been held. Cheongdohyanggyo is a school of long history with a distinctive arrangement of buildings.
