Yongmunchotdae held at Onyangminsokbangmulgwan
온양민속박물관 소장 용문촛대

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYongmunchotdae held at Onyangminsokbangmulgwan consists of two tiers: a lion-shaped base below and a dragon-patterned candle (yongmuncho) above. The base is divided into three levels: a lion-shaped support at the bottom, a bamboo-joint-shaped shaft in the middle, and, at the top, a candle socket set on a drip tray. The dragon-patterned candle above is a long wooden cylinder made to resemble the form of a candle, carved on the inside with a dragon design. Beneath the base of the blue lion is a hollow about 1 cm deep, and only on the blue lion's base is an inscription written in ink: "畵圓 僧 勝尒". The blue lion and the yellow lion show almost identical form and carving technique, indicating the work of a single hand, and the piece appears to have been made by the painter-monk named in the inscription. In both cases, the top of the base takes the form of a candle socket set into a drip tray. Below the drip tray, which connects to the bamboo-joint section, is a support carved as a fully opened six-petalled lotus; perhaps because it lies in the lower part, the original colouring here is comparatively well preserved. The lower base takes the shape of an endearing, sweet-looking recumbent lion; above a downward-turned lotus rises a smooth-surfaced, bamboo-joint-shaped column, on which an upward-turned lotus in turn supports the drip tray. The overall form has no angular corners and is rounded, carved so as to serve its function as a base faithfully. On the underside of each of the two pairs of dragon-patterned candles is an inscription written in ink: on the base of the blue-dragon candle is written "百石" (Baekseok), and on the base of the yellow-dragon candle (Hwangnyongcho) is written "京靑" (Gyeongcheong). Dragon candlesticks were one of the ritual implements used to embellish the space for Buddhist memorial rites at temples in the late Joseon period. Yongmunchotdae held at Onyangminsokbangmulgwan is of a skill in carving and a refined artistic form beyond comparison with surviving candlesticks. The structure of the lion-shaped base and the dragon-patterned candle is intact; the carving is artistic not only in the lion of the base but also in the dragon-patterned candle; the sculptural rendering of the detailed patterns is excellent; and it retains almost exactly the colouring of the time it was made. It is of high art-historical value in that it preserves both its original form as made and the name of the craftsman who made it.
