Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese woodblocks were carved in 1908 to publicise the collected works of Dangye Gim In-seop (1827–1903), a civil official of the late Joseon period. Gim In-seop passed the jinsa examination at the age of seventeen and the higher civil service examination at twenty, becoming Jeongeon (Correct Adviser) in the Office of the Censor-General (Saganwon). At thirty-two he gave up his official post and returned to his home town. In 1862, when he was thirty-six, his father was implicated in a popular uprising and exiled to Imja-do island, and he accompanied him there. At forty-one, a false report by a royal inspector accusing him of oppressing the people led to his own year-long exile at Ganseong in Gangwon-do. These woodblocks were produced by his disciples six years after his death, comprising fourteen volumes bound in seven books. Later, in 1965, his descendant Gim Cheon-su published a further supplementary collection of two volumes together with a chronological record and appendix in one volume. The Dangyejip therefore consists in total of the original collection — fourteen volumes in seven books — plus the supplement and appendix in two books, nine books in all. What is currently designated as a local cultural heritage item is the original collection of fourteen volumes in seven books, which is kept in the woodblock storage hall (Jangpangak) of Dugok Seowon.
