Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeungamsa Temple is an ancient temple founded by the monk Doseon during the reign of King Heongang of Silla, and in the Joseon period it was a leading temple for the publication of Buddhist texts. In more recent times the great monks Haean and Maneung resided there and established the Hanbyeokseonwon, a Seon meditation centre, and the Seungam gangwon, a Buddhist scriptural academy, greatly advancing the scholarly tradition of the local Buddhist community. The three Buddhist texts held here, including the Lotus Sutra, are scriptures that reveal the fundamental meaning of the Buddha's appearance in the world. They were published in 1443 by Grand Prince Hyoryeong and many other members of the royal clan, in order to pray for the longevity of King Sejong the Great and for King Taejong's rebirth in the Pure Land. Surviving copies of this edition are extremely rare, giving it great value as a historical source.
