This is an Amitabha-based Buddhist painting depicting the Nine Grades of Rebirth in the Pure Land, with Amitabha Buddha as the principal image, hung behind the main altar. The principal image of Amitabha Buddha is painted large in the centre of the composition, surrounded by numerous attendant figures. Amitabha sits on a lotus pedestal wearing robes that cover both shoulders, the right hand raised to chest level and the left hand resting on the knee, with a head halo and a body halo depicted around the figure. Below the two knees of the principal image, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, holding a water vessel, and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, holding a lotus branch, are painted, while various other bodhisattvas, monks, and the Eight Classes of Guardian Deities appear on either side of the principal image and in the upper part of the composition. In each of the four corners of the painting are figures of the Four Heavenly Kings, each holding an attribute; their ornaments in particular are decorated lavishly with gold leaf. Painted in 1786, the tenth year of King Jeongjo of Joseon, this Buddhist painting is a valuable resource for art-historical research, notable for its stable composition, its beautiful colouring using mainly green and red, and its delicate line work.
